- The 50th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and China;
- The 35th Anniversary of the establishment of the Western Australia Zhejiang Sister State relationship; and,
- The 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Perth – Chengdu Sister City relationship
MC’d by media icons Adrian Barich and mandarin-speaking Tina Altieri, the event had a busy program including a Welcome to Country by Phil Walleystack, and keynote speeches from:
- Hon. Mark McGowan MLA, Premier of Western Australia
- Mr Sun Yong, Minister to the Chinese Embassy in Australia
- Mr Long Dingbin, Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Perth, and
- Mr Dino Otranto, Chief Operating Officer, Fortescue Metals Group (Platinum Event Partner)
Keynote speeches were in good spirits, consistently highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship between Australia and China, and spoke to the positive outlook and best wishes for the relationship from both sides. In his remarks, the WA Premier Hon Mark McGowan MLA said: “It was an incredibly important decision in 1972 to recognise the People’s Republic of China. When you think about it in political terms, probably the most courageous decision in memory of a government in Australia to do something of that magnitude. What it has meant in the time since is that the cultural, social and economic ties have grown exponentially. Here in Western Australia, it is the epicentre of the relationship.”
The evening was filled with enjoyable entertainment including a powerful rendition of the Australian and Chinese national anthems by tenor Jun Zhang; and performances from Eddie Li and the Perth Symphony Orchestra, and Varley Strings. Attendees of the gala witnessed a number of formalities that are crucial to the WA – China space, including:
- The launch of the ACBC WA BCEC report: “Western Australia’s Trade and Economic Relationship with China”
- Presentation of $100,000 donation to the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation by CCCA Perth Branch and Norton Gold Fields, and

– The presentation of the inaugural Young Entrepreneur Award (sponsored by CITIC Pacific Mining) to Mr Andy Yang of Black Diamond Drilling, and
– The presentation of the Honorary Award for an individual’s outstanding and sustained commitment to furthering the Western Australia-China relationship to Mr Kerry Stokes AC
